ABOUT ASWALK FESTIVAL
Authenticity is our Authority.
Who We Are
ASWALK Festival (Appearance and Skin Walk Festival) is Africa’s premier travelling cultural platform dedicated to advancing appearance dignity, psychosocial well-being, and ethical visibility for people living with visible differences, skin conditions, and appearance-related conditions.
Rooted in lived experience and grounded in African realities, ASWALK exists to dismantle appearance-based prejudice and reclaim the narrative of identity. We do not ask for inclusion within broken systems; we build new cultural spaces where dignity, belonging, and justice are non-negotiable.
Through a powerful convergence of culture, arts, dialogue, movement, and collective presence, ASWALK is transforming how society across Sub-Saharan Africa understands skin, appearance, and difference.
The Appearance Republic: Our Moral Framework
ASWALK Festival is built on the foundation of the Appearance Republic, a community framework where lived experience is recognised as legitimate authority.
Within the Republic, people move beyond being reduced to “patients,” “cases,” or “subjects.” They become Citizens of Identity, organised into 11 Houses that reflect the broad spectrum of visible differences, skin conditions, and appearance experiences. These Houses are not medical labels; they are identity containers designed to foster belonging without hierarchy, comparison, or erasure.
The Appearance Republic exists to answer a core question:
How do we create visibility without harm, inclusion without pity, and community without domination?
Our Five Core Principles
Everything ASWALK does is guided by five non-negotiable principles:
Appearance is not a flaw to be fixed
Lived experience is legitimate expertise
Visibility must never require performance or pity
Justice demands truth, not the flattening of harm
Dignity is non-negotiable
These principles protect our community, shape our programming, and guide how we engage institutions, media, and the public.
How the Festival Comes to Life
ASWALK Festival brings the Appearance Republic into public space through interconnected pillars:
The Mind — Africa Appearance Summit (AAS)
A high-level, community-led dialogue platform where lived experience shapes research, healthcare practice, policy, and cultural reform.
The Heart — Inter-Condition Games
A participatory, adaptive gathering where the 11 Houses connect through sport, culture, arts, and creative expression, fostering empathy, joy, and shared presence.
The Story — TAP Talks & Film
Through impact storytelling, social impact entertainment, and performances, including partnerships such as with IN PLAIN SIGHT – The Appearance Film Festival, ASWALK amplifies voices and narratives that have long been marginalised.
The Movement — MASK OFF WALK
Our public visibility action held across cities. Unfiltered. Unapologetic. Grounded in dignity.
No Cover. No Shame. No Apologies.
Our Vision
We envision a rooted, radiant Africa where every individual can live openly in their appearance, identity, and truth, free from shame, judgment, or enforced silence.
By 2035, ASWALK aims to support the growth of Appearance-Positive Collectives across African cities, influencing culture, policy, and public consciousness through ethical visibility and community power.

SAFEGUARDING & ETHICS STATEMENT
Safeguarding & Ethics
ASWALK Festival is grounded in a firm commitment to dignity, consent, and ethical engagement. We prioritise the psychosocial safety of all participants, particularly people living with visible differences, skin conditions, and appearance-related conditions.
Children and young people are protected through strict safeguarding protocols, and participation is never contingent on visibility or storytelling. Media engagement, documentation, and representation are governed by clear ethical standards that reject pity-based narratives, spectacle, and extractive storytelling.
ASWALK Festival is convened by The Appearance Positive (TAP) and guided by the ethical and research frameworks of the Appearance Positive Institute (APi). Together, we uphold a culture of accountability, respect, and collective care.
